The first thing that any professional chef will tell you about cooking great food is that you need the right tools. That is definitely the case for sous vide. But do you have to pay several hundred dollars for a quality sous video cooker?
That’s the question we are going to answer in this Anova Nano Review. This cooker costs a lot less than the premium models, but it is still pretty impressive.
Let’s take a closer look.
Anova Nano Features
There are definitely plenty of features included with this sous vide machine. First, precision cooking on this smaller Anova Culinary Precision Cooker allows you to produce results that you cannot get with other cooking methods, and that you cannot get with most of the budget sous vide cookers on the market. You get incredible precision with adjustments of 2/10th of a degree and a range of 32 to 197 degrees. The cook time can be up to 99 hours.
This is also an exceptionally easy-to-use cooker that can easily be combined with other tools like a sous vide torch for searing meat or a sous vide vacuum sealer to get food prepped. The feature that makes this sous vide machine so user-friendly is the smart technology built right into it. For example, This Anova Nano unit can be remote controlled using an app on your phone. The Bluetooth version is BLE 4.2 and the app is available for Android or iOS.
The other feature that makes the Anova Nano really unique is how easy it is to use. All you have to do is attach this Anova Nano to almost any pot in your kitchen and add water. Drop in whatever food or jar you want to cook and you can begin with the touch of a button. It will cook up to 5 gallons (20L) max.
The Anova Nano is also the perfect size to fit into a drawer or be tucked away. Even at it’s widest, it is only a couple of inches, and it is 12.8 inches in length. It weighs 1.6 pounds. The clamp that keeps it attached to your pot will fit onto a lip of 0.7 inches or a total of 18 millimeters.
There are a few advantages that this sous vide machine has over the competition. The first is how compact it is. If you have used a sous vide cooker before – or seen someone else cook using that method – you probably know that they normally take up a lot more space than the Anova Culinary Precision Cooker Nano. All you do is clamp this cooker onto the side of any of the pots in your kitchen and you get a ready-to-use sous vide cooker. Just like the original, this precision cooker suspends the stainless-steel bottom that contains the heating coil, thermometer and circulation fan down into the pot. The coil heats the water on and off to maintain the exact temperature you have set while the fan circulates the water to keep your food cooking evenly. When you’re done, this little guy is small enough to be tucked away in a drawer.
Another advantage that this model has over similarly-priced ones is how well it works. You get perfect results with the Anova Nano – every single time you use it. The fan circulates the water amazingly well, preventing dry edges and uncooked centers. The juice is trapped inside the bag or other cooking container and creates the most delectable sous vide meals with every single flavor morsel intact. Food comes out tender, moist and cooked to perfection. No matter what you are cooking, meat, veggies, fruit, cheese or anything else, it will always come out exactly right.
Finally, you have the advantages of embedded smart technology and a one-year warranty. It speaks to just how strongly Anova believes in their product if they are willing to offer a full year warranty on it. Plus, you get the ability to control the Anova Culinary Precision Cooker Nano using either the built-in control panel on the device or with your smartphone from up to 30 feet away.
As for the disadvantages, there aren’t that many of them. One of the two problems that this particular cooker has is that the control panel buttons are small and difficult to use. Plus, the instructions are really difficult to figure out the first time. The good news is, you can use the app instead, but be aware that you’ll be asked to create an account at some point after you set it up and sync it to your cooker. It doesn’t let you back into the app until you do, and that can be a major pain if you are right in the middle of preparing dinner.
The only other thing to keep in mind is that after a few months of use, the clamp will start to loosen up and won’t cling as tightly to the side of the pot. However, the good news about this is that the Anova Culinary Precision Cooker Nano has a one-year warranty so if your clamp will no longer work, then it is pretty likely that you will be able to get a replacement.
So, should you get the Anova Culinary Precision Cooker Nano? The verdict is a resounding yes. Even though there are a couple of minor problems, this is probably the best affordable sous vide machine on the market right now. Anova is one of the world-class brands when it comes to sous vide machines and materials, and this unit is small and compact, while still giving you all of the features that you want.
You’ll be able to cook food perfectly each and every time with this cooker, and once you start cooking food sous vide, you will never want to go back to regular food again. Plus, the price is just right.
